Most Common Pills for Erectile Dysfunction

You might be surprised what the most common Erectile Dysfunction pills are today. Are you experiencing problems obtaining and maintaining an erection adequate for sexual intimacy or erectile dysfunction (ED)? Whether you’re 18 or 60+ years old, you’re certainly not alone. Two Erectile Dysfunction medications are some of the most prescribed drugs in the World today.

Over 30 million American men are affected by erectile dysfunction or ED, according to the Urology Care Foundation. Interestingly, while ED is generally thought of as a condition that affects middle-aged and older men, around 25% of all men under 40 experience ED regularly.

  • Fortunately, a range of treatments is accessible to treat the condition of Erectile Dysfunction and help you improve and sustain an erection without any difficulties. The two most popular erectile dysfunction medications on the marketplace are Sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra®) and Tadalafil (Generic Cialis)

These are the first drugs effectively for Erectile Dysfunction pills introduced in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra Erectile Dysfunction Medications

Sildenafil (generic Viagra) is one of the most common and widely used erectile dysfunction pills currently available. At first, it was developed as a treatment for high blood pressure; Sildenafil received approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an ED drug in the late 1990’s, and has been used to treat ED for over 20-Years effectively. Besides its effectiveness in the treatment of ED, Sildenafil costs less than Viagra.

Sildenafil provides increased blood flow to the penis making it easier for you to achieve a harder, long-lasting erection. It typically works after 30 to 60 minutes of taking the medication and lasts for three to five hours depending on the person.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) reports that since the Sildenafil approval and launch in April 1998 that “Sildenafil has received regulatory approval in over 110 countries. Over 45 million prescriptions have been issued to over 15 million patients…with over 500 million tablets of Sildenafil distributed worldwide”.

Over 60 clinical trials have been done on Sildenafil, and the results clearly show that men taking Sildenafil for Erectile Dysfunction is not only safe but extremely effective to help men achieve a hard erection when they are sexually stimulated. One study released their results of a clinical trial of 315 Men from five different countries titled “A Dose-Escalation Study to Access the Efficacy and Safety of Sildenafil Citrate in Men With Erectile Dysfunction

This comprehensive study had a randomized selection of 156 Men treated with Sildenafil for Erectile Dysfunction. In comparison, another 156 men received a placebo. Of note, for the 156 Men taking Sildenafil, “After 12 weeks and 26 weeks of treatment, 82% and 79% of patients receiving sildenafil reported improved erections”.  The study concluded that “Sildenafil is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for men with erectile dysfunction…”.  Check out our article “What is Sildenafil & How Does Sildenafil Work

Tadalafil (the active ingredient in Cialis) Erectile Dysfunction Pills

Development started in the 1990’s and approved by the FDA in 2003. Tadalafil (Generic Cialis) is similar to Sildenafil, but it is a longer-lasting Erectile Dysfunction medications.

Tadalafil is better known by the brand name Cialis. With a 17 1/2 hour half-life, Tadalafil remains active for up to 36 hours after it’s first taken, making it the longest-acting of the erectile dysfunction drugs on the market today.

A standard dose of Sildenafil lasts for about three to five hours. To get the same results with Tadalafil (Generic Cialis), you’d need to take multiple Sildenafil pills over two days.

Tadalafil starts taking effect anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes after you take it. Similar to Sildenafil, it can be taken with or without food.

Like Sildenafil, Tadalfil is also a well-established and understood medication on the market today. Numerous clinical trials have been conducted both in the U.S. and internationally to determine the safety of Tadalfil and the effectiveness of taking it for Erectile Dysfunction.

“No treatment-related serious adverse events were reported during the study.”

The National Institute of Health (NIH) has hundreds of clinical studies on Tadalafil. One such study of 778 men taking Tadalafil found that “No treatment-related serious adverse events were reported during the study.”

The side effects of both of these Erectile Dysfunction pills Tadalafil (generic Cialis) and Sildenafil (generic Viagra) are similar.

(see side effects table below.)

Like Sildenafil (generic Viagra), Tadalafil (generic Cialis) can interact with some medications used to treat hypertension and other cardiovascular conditions. Let your doctor know if you use any other medicines before considering Tadalafil.

For most people, the most significant advantage of Tadalafil is it lasts longer than Sildenafil. A single dose of Tadalafil (generic Cialis) usually lasts for most of a weekend, so there is no need to take the pill right before sex.

Compared to Sildenafil, the standard dosages of Tadalafil are far lower. The usual starting dose is 5 mg taken one hour before engaging in sexual activity, with an alternative larger (20mg) dosage used, depending on how a man responds to treatment.

Overall, Tadalafil (generic Cialis) is a good option for men who want to avoid taking a pill right before sex. But want to opt instead for a daily Erectile Dysfunction medication that lasts for days and weekends.

Sildenafil can be taken with food or without, although taking the Erectile Dysfunction medications after a big meal or one that is heavy in fats, might slow down your body’s absorption of the drug.

Sildenafil’s potential side effects are the same as most other Erectile Dysfunction pills. These (generally mild) side effects stop in three to five hours as the drug’s potency declines in your system.

Sildenafil can also potentially lead to more severe side effects, particularly in people with heart conditions or those who take other prescription medication. More precisely, it can interact with certain nitrates used to treat hypertension and cause issues related to low blood pressure.

Because of this, it’s essential to talk to a qualified doctor before considering using Sildenafil or any other prescription Erectile Dysfunction pills.

Sildenafil or Taldanfil – Both are Good Erectile Dysfunction Pills
